Starting in 2008, ice hockey in the Philippines began to gain popularity, and in February of 2015 the Federation of Ice Hockey League was established.
The Philippine national team started to participate in open tournaments which lead them to also become a member of the IIHF in 2016.
The team then competed in the 2017 Asian Winter games which was their first official tournament where they participated at the division 2 of the ice hockey tournament. Philippines wins first ever gold in ice hockey, was at the 2017 Southeast Asian Games.They started the tournament with 12-0 victory over Indonesia and a Shootout Win over Malaysia.
To wrap up their campaign the Philippines national team, undefeated 5-4 win over Thailand earning their first ever gold medal in the history of participating in the Southeast Asian Games.
Macau National Ice Hockey Team, represents Macau, China and is an associate member of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). Although Macau, China is not ranked in IIHF world rankings, or any other World championships and Olympic games. They do compete in the Challenge Cup of Asia, the regional tournament for lower-tier hockey national teams in Asia.
SWOT hockey has geared up the Macau National Ice Hockey Team for the 2018 IIHF Challenge Cup of Asia – Division I. The competition took place from 24-29 March 2018 in Kuala Lumpur at the Malaysia National Ice Skating Stadium. Macau competed against Malaysia (Champions), India and Indonesia (First debut in the Challenge Cup of Asia). During the competition Macau had a bad start but they started to improve as the tournament went on. They have lost in the first round (India 3-0 and Malaysia 7-1) but eventually avenging their loss to India by beating them 4-2 in the semi-finals; moving on to the finals against Malaysia.
It was a 7-2 gold medal victory for Malaysia but for Macau against strong teams and losing the first round it was a great tournament for them to come in second place.
The Philippines women’s national team made their international appearance in the 2017 IIHF Women’s Challenge Cup of Asia hosted by Thailand.
This year in 2018 the Philippines team competed in Division 1 of the 2018 IIHF Women’s Challenge Cup of Asia hosted by Malaysia. There were a total of 4 teams Malaysia, United Arab Emirates, Philippines and India.
Having close games between Malaysia (3-1 Loss) and United Arab Emirates (5-4 Loss) the Philippines National team managed to place in 3rd after beating India (6-2) which is also their biggest win recorded in IIHF tournaments.
